About Efthymios
Efthymios (aka Tim) Chatzigiannis is a composer/sound artist born in
Ioánnina, Greece. His musical training started at the age of 6 when he
began classical piano lessons, which lasted for six years. At 14 he
took up the electric guitar mainly interested in rock, blues and jazz.
He started performing regularly with various bands until the age of 17,
when he went to Venice to study Architecture at the Institute of
Architecture of Venice. While in Venice he continued performing with
various bands and studying classical harmony until he decided to leave
after one year to the United Kingdom, and focus on his studies in
music.
When he arrived in the UK he became acquainted with the music of Edgard Varése,
Karlheinz Stockhousen, Alvin Lucier and other composers of the 20th
century that influenced his thought on musical composition and sonic
perception, and pushed him in exploring sound as a raw material. In
2005 he completed a BA program in Music at the Anglia Ruskin University
in Cambridge, and in 2007 he completed an MA in the Interdisciplinary
Arts and Practices, specializing in Composition and Sonic Art at the
Oxford Brookes University, where he is also undertaking a PhD study
entitled: “The Musical Tendencies of Aural Evolutions”, exploring the creative possibilities of acoustic phenomena
and the way sound’s identity is shaped by the interaction with the
environment that surrounds it.
Efthymios is also composing electronic
music, mainly using Logic Pro, Max/MSP and various free plug-ins. He is also using electronics
in live performance on his own, with the improvisation ensemble TRATC,
and improvised prog-rock band Nonstop Tango, exploring the creative
possibilities of improvisation and “open” structures.
